HOW MIDNIGHT SET
IS MADE
A film lighting simulator from a video producer, editor and musician, with human craft at its heart and a crew of AIs on the engineering.
A note from Pat
I've lived a creative life for more than 25 years, as a musician and a video producer. I know what it means to make something from the soul.
My imagination has always run ahead of my time, and there are things I was never good at. Math is one of them. With my life given to video and music, I was never going to become a strong coder.
Today's tools changed that. For the first time, I can take something that lives in my mind and actually bring it to life. Without them, this game would not exist, and I'm not ashamed of that.
So here is my whole creative process, out in the open. I'll keep doing my best to turn my imagination into an experience you can play.

The director
PAT
Creator and producer. A video producer, video editor and musician who knows what a real set needs.
The concept
The whole idea, from the first sketch
Every feature
Brainstormed from real set experience
The bug hunt
Playtests every build like a camera test
The final cut
Nothing ships or posts without his yes
Human craft
THE WORLD IS MADE BY PEOPLE
Music
Independent bands, each with written permission
Sets and props
Rooms, furniture and film gear from human artists on Fab
Surfaces
Concrete, plaster and wood scanned from the real world
Faces
MetaHumans, built from scans of real people
Real light
Every fixture from its maker's published photometrics
Real places
Mountains from USGS survey data, sun from real latitudes
We're reaching out to gear makers for permission to use their real names. Until then, and for anyone who says no, every fixture gets its own fictional name, with the real model it's based on shown in the fine print.
